A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, November 18, 2013, at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend. Interment will be in Andrew Cemetery, Friend with military services conducted by American Legion Ford-Banka Post #183. Visitation will be on Monday, 9am until service time. Memorials are directed in care of the family. Pallbearers are his grandsons, Marshall W. Chase, Matthew J. Eurich, Lukas W. Eurich, Anthony O. Awoleye, Dakota W. Chase and Stacey J. Chase.

Wayne Chase was born September 27, 1918, rural Beaver Crossing, Nebraska to Clarence and Fern (Brewer) Chase, the 3rd of 12 children and passed away, Thursday, November 14, 2013 at the Friend Manor in Friend, Nebraska at the age of 95 years 1 month and 18 days. As a young boy he attended Friend Public School and graduated with the class of 1937. After high school Wayne moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he was employed in a boiler factory. He returned to Friend and married his high school sweetheart, Doris A. Winters at Hiawatha, KS on April 30, 1941. To this union a son, John Wayne, and a daughter, Mary Ann, were born.

After they were married they lived for a short time in Lead, SD, then moved back to Friend. Wayne enlisted in the US Army on September 14, 1942. After basic training he was transferred to Canada where he worked on cold weather equipment testing. Wayne was stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC and was sent to England, France, Italy and Germany as a mechanic for automotive wheel vehicle, as a Tech 5, with the (3rd Echelon), 297th Ordinance, HV Maintenance Company under General Patton. He was honorably discharged January 26, 1946 as a Tech Sergeant.

Returning to Friend, Wayne and Doris ran the Sinclair station for a short time, and then he started farming in about 1948, retiring in 1968. During this time he attended agriculture classes on the GI Bill and also attained his private pilot’s license. Wayne and Doris enjoyed many trips in the airplane to visit family and friends. They attended many dances in the area, enjoying the local bands. He also worked at the Friend Lumber Yard while farming.

He was a member of the American Legion Ford-Banka Post #183, Friend, VFW #4959, Crete, and a former member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

Wayne and Doris retired from farming and raising livestock and moved into Friend. He then drove a road maintainer for Saline County. In his spare time he enjoyed bowling on several leagues, restoring bicycles, played lots of pitch, and working crossword and mind puzzles in the daily papers.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Debra Chase, Friend, daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Michael Awoleye, Ely, IA; grandchildren and spouse, Stacey Chase, Friend, Marshall W. and Jamie Chase, Lincoln, Matthew J. Eurich, Lincoln, Lukas W. Eurich, Gretna, and Anthony O. Awoleye, Lincoln, great-grandchildren, Dakota W. Chase, Friend, Parker Ann Chase, Lincoln; brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Jean Chase, Wyoming, sisters, LueEtta Wagner, Central Point, OR, Opal Rule, Burchard, Doris Falck, Western, sister-in-law, Jane Chase, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Doris, in 1997, brothers and sisters-in-law, Cecil and Nita Chase, Leslie and Norvelle Chase, Loren (Bud) Chase, Delbert Chase, sisters and brothers-in-law, Leone and Leon Henke, Carol and Arthur Osborn, Retha Chase, Leo Wagner, Gene Rule, Neil Falck, niece, Sarah Osborn, and a nephew, William “Billy” Chase.
